The Brian Arnold Memorial Scholarship
Guidelines:
1. Eligible entrants are high school seniors currently enrolled in Mount Dora High School, Tavares High School or Eustis High School graduating in May 2010 and slated for college attendance in the summer or fall of 2010.
2. The format for the contest is an essay of 600 words minimum and 650 words maximum. We are looking for clarity of expression, creativity and well reasoned positions. We are not interested in emotive demagoguery or partisan political diatribes. We can get that from cable news!
3. We advise that you submit your entry after you have received assistance from the appropriate faculty members of your school. We want you to use your teachers as a resource!
4. Entries will be judged by the members of Writers One Flight Up, Mount Dora.
5. All entries must be submitted via email in a Word Document, double spaced. No PDF's. Your name, high school, English teacher’s name and your personal contact information (email & phones) should appear only on the cover page accompanying your entry. Do not put your name on any other pages. Entries are judged without knowledge of the writer.

7. The deadline for entries is midnight, Sunday March 7th, 2010.
8. Three Finalists will be selected: One from Mount Dora High School, Tavares High School and Eustis High School. The Overall Winner will be chosen from among the three Finalists and will receive the $500 Brian Arnold memorial Scholarship.
9. The scholarship winner will be announced April 2nd, 2010.
10. The winning essays of the three Finalists will be published in the spring 2010 issue of Pulse Magazine.
11. Essay Topics are:
How is the economy affecting you, your friends and your family? Is there anything positive in your life that has come out of this economic downturn?
Concerning school uniforms, if you were the Principal, what would you advocate and why?
Thinking of your Best Teacher in high school, what made him/her “the Best” and how did he/she inspire you?
What role do cell phones play in your life and in the lives of your friends? Discuss the plusses and minuses.
While it’s unlikely you’ll be a Super Hero, if you had the powers to change one thing in the tri-cities (Mount Dora, Tavares, Eustis) what would it be?
